Mapping An Information Architecture's Scent
Mark Game has written an article on information scent, in the context of designing navigation labels on a site. To quote:
Like animals who search for food in the wild, Pirolli suggests that humans optimize their information searches by looking for the greatest benefit with the least cost. He goes on to say that humans judge the value of unseen information resources based on guesses about immediately available cues. In this research, cues are represented by the site's menu labels.
